Although the 2024 Summer Olympics are just ramping up in Paris, it's not too early to start looking ahead to the 2028 Games. Especially for those in the United States, where the next summer edition will be held.

For the first time in 26 years, the Olympics will take place in the U.S. in 2028, when the Games are scheduled to occur in Los Angeles. It'll be the first U.S.-hosted Olympics since the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

It will also be the first time the Summer Olympics have been held in the United States since 1996, when the Games took place in Atlanta.

The L.A. Games are scheduled for July 14-30, 2028. So they will occur earlier than this year's Olympics in Paris, which begin Friday and run through Aug. 11.

The organizing committee for the 2028 Olympics has proposed the addition of five sports for those Games: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash. In the past, baseball/softball (1992-2008, 2020), cricket (1900) and lacrosse (1904, 1908) have made appearances as Olympic sports.

It could make sense for baseball and softball to return in 2028, as Los Angeles has plenty of facilities available to host games. In 2020, Japan defeated the U.S. in the gold medal games for both baseball and softball.

Los Angeles hasn't been the site for the Olympic Games since it hosted the 1984 edition. L.A. also hosted the 1932 Summer Olympics.

It will become only the third city to become a three-time Olympic host, along with London (1908, 1948, 2012) and Paris (1900, 1924, 2024).

Many years, cities must construct facilities to hold certain events specifically for the Olympics. That won't be the case in Los Angeles in 2028. For the first time in Games history, the city already has enough stadiums and venues in place.

Among the competition sites for the L.A. Games will be Crypto.com Arena, the Los Angeles Convention Center, L.A. Memorial Coliseum, SoFi Stadium and others.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was used each of the previous two times that the Olympics were held in the city.

L.A. was named the host city for the 2028 Games back in 2017. Los Angeles had originally bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics, but with only L.A. and Paris in contention at the end, the two cities were awarded Games simultaneously, with Paris going first in 2024, followed by Los Angeles in 2028.
