Duchess of Cornwall sends stunning Cricket World Cup Final-themed cake to BBC commentators

The Duchess of Cornwall has gifted a cake to hungry broadcasters at England's first Cricket World Cup final in 27 years. 

Sent to the BBC's Test Match Special team as the country's side plays New Zealand at Lord's, the sweet treat was a lemon and elderflower sponge made by Julie Brownlee.

It was delivered by Captain Charles Ross on behalf of the Duchess of Cornwall. 

The BBC's team, which includes Jonathan Agnew, Phil Tufnell, Isa Guha and Michael Vaughan, are well known cake enthusiasts, with Prime Minister Theresa May delivering homemade brownies to the group in 2017.

Camilla, 71, was closely involved with the design of the cake.

It features two cricket helmets, a replica of the World Cup trophy and figures of the England and New Zealand captains, Eoin Morgan and Kane Williamson.

As a fan of Test Match Special, The Duchess of Cornwall is aware of the tradition of listeners sending cakes in to the TMS team and wanted to celebrate the Cricket World Cup being held in the UK.

The tradition of listeners sending cake to Test Match Special goes back to Brian Johnston's time on the programme. 

In 2001 the Queen presented the TMS team with a fruit cake baked under her close supervision.

TMS lead commentator Jonathan Agnew said: 'We are incredibly honoured to have received this beautiful cake from the Duchess of Cornwall. 

'As anybody who listens to TMS will know, we eat an awful lot of baked goods in the commentary box and this cake is an extra special treat to mark the final of the Cricket World Cup between England and New Zealand.'

Early morning rain in London delayed the start of play this morning, as thousands headed to Trafalgar Square to watch the action in the city centre.

England captain Eoin Morgan said the toss would have been a '50/50 call' and was 'not at all' disappointed to be bowling first.

Thousands of cricket fans from across the world have descended on Lord's cricket ground in St John's Wood for the sell-out occasion.

The venue was last used for the inaugural World Cup in 1999 with prior years Lord's being used in 1975, 1979 and 1983.

A win for either side would represent their first World Cup title.

England is in the title match for the fourth time, and the first since 1992, while New Zealand is playing in a second final, after losing to Australia in 2015.
