Yankees get mostly good news on Giancarlo Stanton’s knee injury
Giancarlo Stanton isn’t returning to the injured list just yet. He isn’t returning to the field yet, either.
After Stanton suffered a right knee contusion in Tuesday night’s win over Toronto, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the outfielder’s MRI exam came back clean, though the slugger reported stiffness in the joint Wednesday morning.
Boone said Stanton would “probably” still travel with the team to London on Wednesday night.
“[The] tests were good,” Boone said. “There’s no swelling in there, but he’s a bit sore and stuff. He’s going through treatment right now. Nothing as far as moves or anything like that. We’re kind of seeing how the next few hours unfold, and even the next few days.”
The second-highest paid player in baseball has barely seen the field in his second season with the Yankees, appearing in just nine games. After missing nearly three months with various injuries — a torn biceps, strained shoulder and calf strain — Stanton played in six games before leaving Tuesday with his latest ailment.
“This is a great player, important to our club,” Boone said. “Obviously when he’s going well, he’s one of those rare guys that can impact the game in a profound way and carry a club when he’s rolling hot.
“Hopefully it’s not something that’s too long, and we get him back up and running pretty soon, because I feel like over the past couple days, his timing had been getting pretty good, so hopefully this is a small bump in the road, but we’ll just have to see.”
Because of the trip to England for the two-game set against the Red Sox, the Yankees follow Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays with three off days in the next five days, though Boone said the reduced schedule wasn’t a factor in keeping Stanton on the active roster.
