The Boston Red Sox fired pitching coach Dave Bush and third-base coach Carlos Febles on Monday as the team tries to rebuild after a third last-place finish in four seasons.

Bush had been the Red Sox's pitching coach since the 2020 season after serving three years as the club's minor league pitching coordinator. He is a former pitcher who spent nine years in the majors with the Blue Jays, Brewers and Rangers.

Boston's pitching staff posted a 4.52 ERA in 2023, which was 21st overall in MLB.

"Disappointed is probably the best way to put it," Bush told MassLive.com. "I wish we had played better, wish we had pitched better. That's the end story. We just weren't good enough. The expectations are always high here. That's what makes Boston so special."

Febles played second base for Kansas City for parts of six seasons. He joined the Red Sox organization in 2007 and took over as third-base coach in 2018, when Boston won the World Series.

But as an infield instructor, he wasn't able to keep the team from committing 102 errors this season -- second most in all of baseball.

The Red Sox (78-84) finished last in the American League East for the third time in the past four seasons and are searching for a new chief baseball officer after Chaim Bloom was fired last month.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said two weeks ago he will be back with the team next year.
