Yankees minor-leaguer tests positive for coronavirus - 1 minute read
A New York Yankees minor league player has tested positive for coronavirus, the team confirmed to USA TODAY Network's Pete Caldera.
The minor leaguer wasn’t identified by the club in accordance with HIPAA laws. The team said the player did not have contact with anyone on the big league side of spring training and the minor-league camp is located about a mile away.
It is the first case of the disease to be reported in professional baseball (major or minor leagues) in the U.S. Major League Baseball suspended spring training and delayed the start of the 2020 regular season last week due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has effectively shut down sports.
Before the news of the player's positive coronavirus test, MLB sent a memo to all 30 teams telling them to end all organized workouts.
In the NBA, three players (Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz and the Detroit Pistons' Christian Wood) have been identified as receiving positive coronavirus tests.
