Yankees fans don't recognize Aaron Judge in London

LONDON — How many people in New York — in North America, even — would wear a Yankees cap, then cross paths with Aaron Judge and not identify him as the team’s iconic behemoth?

Here across the pond, Judge found it to be a surprisingly high percentage.

“I was actually walking near the London Eye yesterday, and I ran into a couple of people that had a Yankee hat on,” Judge said Friday at a London Stadium news conference. “They had no idea who I was. (I said), ‘I’m Aaron, great to meet you.’

“The Yankee logo is pretty recognizable world-wide. I’ve just got to introduce myself, I guess, to some of those guys wearing the Yankee caps.”

Easily the Yankees’ most famous active player, Judge gets the mission of this trip, which will start its main event Saturday evening with the first of two games against the rival Red Sox.

“I’ve watched a lot of football games and a couple of basketball games out here, and I’ve been a little jealous,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to go do this. I know this whole London Series has been in progress for a couple of years now. I’m just excited and blessed that the Yankees and Red Sox get to participate in this. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

He spoke enthusiastically of taking aim at the 385-foot wall in centerfield here, and of taking these games seriously as the Yankees’ try to expand their American League East lead over the BoSox, who reside in third place, beyond their current lead of nine games. He explained that he has been napping more frequently in an attempt to adjust his body clock to the relatively dramatic time change.

Yet Judge exhibited the most excitement about the novelty of these games. Shoot, he didn’t even mind being welcomed by the enemy amidst the general anonymity.

“A couple of people said hello. A lot of Red Sox fans,” he said. “They come up just shaking hands, say hello. I’ve enjoyed the last couple of days here.”
