The Mets Are Eliminated. Now Will Mickey Callaway Survive?

Shortly after the Mets were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday night, despite a 10-3 win over the Miami Marlins, Manager Mickey Callaway gathered the players in the clubhouse and expressed his gratitude for how hard they had played through most of the season.

He lauded them for coming back from a large deficit earlier in the season to stay in contention into the last week of the season. Then he expressed confidence that the team would build on its modest success, next season and beyond. At the end of the speech, the players applauded.

But after the Mets failed to make the playoffs in both of Callaway’s two seasons at the helm, there are questions about whether he will be around in 2020. He has one year left on his contract, and his status will be sorted out by the front office.

After his speech to the players, Callaway went into his news conference and declared that he should be the one to carry them into the future.
