Sports-Drake Contains Multitudes
Like us regular fans, the stars of screen and stage and song express their zeal in every which way. Some are fair-weather, others die-hard; some are charmed, others jinxed; some are endearing, others obnoxious. But one-Toronto's most famous sideline savant-manages to be each, a veritable web of fandom. And so, with Drake's beloved Raptors now champions and his curse "lifted," we plot the unique intricacies of his allegiances.
LIKABILITY: Genuine concern for an injured Kevin Durant? Good look. Galumphing into victorious locker rooms? Less so.
BANDWAGONING: Aubrey has a habit of claiming dubious connections to heavy favorites. (Roll Tide!) Less bandwagon-y? Toronto! Then again, the Raps do pay him.
CURSEDNESS: The "Drake Curse" as we knew it might be banished, but Drizzy is still far from a good-luck charm.
CRINGEWORTHINESS: This metric's ceiling? A multiplatinum superstar holding an Irish flag behind Conor McGregor was really hard to watch.
Corresponding song: "Best I Ever Had"
The sports-yakking class went loco around Aubrey's sideline shoulder massage of Raptors coach Nick Nurse during the playoffs, but the enthusiasm here actually makes sense. He is the Raps' "global ambassador," after all. Give the bellyaching a rest.
Corresponding song: "Two Birds, One Stone"
Champagne Papi's been seen quietly repping English heavyweights Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, citing friendships with Mario Balotelli, Didier Drogba and others. "Man I just love the sport!" he tweeted in 2012. Pick a side, my dude.
It was five years ago that October's Very Own dropped a single dedicated to Manziel (and the NBA's Andrew Wiggins). And now? Manziel threw seven INTs for the Montreal Alouettes last year, while Wiggins spent a season being roasted by ex-teammate Jimmy Butler.
The man airballed a jumper by a solid 5 feet at Big Blue Madness in 2014 while decked out in Wildcats warm-ups. It marked peak corniness, but John Calipari's bunch went to the Final Four that season. The season-long snickering must have helped.
Corresponding song: "Nice for What"
The internet lost its mind during a yearslong Serena-Drizzy saga (and romance!). Also: Exhibit A of the erstwhile Drake Curse-when Williams lost a chance at a calendar grand slam, at the 2015 U.S. Open, with the rapper courtside. #BlameDrake
