Dallas Mavericks: He's back! Seth Curry explains why he returned to Mavericks in free agency over other options
Seth Curry, who was recently re-acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, joined the Dennis and Cowlishaw show on ESPN Dallas 103.3 [KESN-FM] Friday to discuss the 2019 NBA offseason and his return to Dallas. Below are highlights from the full interview.
Curry: "I was looking at a lot of different options once free agency opened. It was kind of the first time in my career where I had a lot of options and got to pick where I wanted to go. When I heard about Dallas and they called and showed interest, it's a familiar place obviously and I was excited about the opportunity.
"Rick Carlisle is a good coach. It's as simple as that. He puts his players in good positions to succeed offensively and defensively. He likes guards that can do multiple things out there -- playing multiple guards at the same time. I played some of my best basketball when I was there a couple of years ago so I'm excited to rejoin the team and help get them back to the playoffs .... I wanted to get back to playing with guys like Luka (Doncic) and (Kristaps Porzingis). Unselfish guys. Luka's one of the best passers in the league right now. ... I'm excited about the opportunity."
Curry: "It was a great season, especially coming off a full year out being injured and coming back out and getting my feet back under me and healthy again ... playing pretty much every game. Throughout the season that was one of my goals throughout the year. My first time in the playoffs, making a run to the Western Conference Finals was a lot of fun. I got a lot of experience under my belt playing in big-time games and on the near-biggest stage possible. I got a lot better and am looking forward to getting better.
"We had a deep team. We knew that coming into the year -- a deep bench. When one guy went down, somebody else tried to step up and fill that role. When (Jusuf) Nurkic hurt his knee mid-season, other guys stepped in and we didn’t miss a beat. Heading into the playoffs, we knew we were confident no matter what and we showed it. It was a fun year and a fun team to be a part of. A lot of experience throughout that season."
Curry: "I like our team .... We have KP, who hasn’t played in a couple of years so you kind of forget about him, but he’s as good as it gets when it comes to pickups this offseason. He’s young and he’s already one of the best in the league. We’re confident in what we have and it’s just putting the right pieces around Luka and KP. I don’t think we’re done. We have a lot of options going forward as far as how to make our team better.
"KP can do it all. He’s versatile and big. He’s 7-foot so he can shoot it over anybody. He can play out on the perimeter, obviously. You have to be connected to him at all times, so that makes it easier for his teammates to make plays and get space. It should be a tough offense to guard, able to make plays and unselfish more than anything. Great passion is on the team. It’s about getting to know each other and KP getting his legs back going. Once he does that, we’ll be a tough team."
