Korea's OIympic Team Takes Shape - Butterfly Table Tennis - 1 minute read
(by Steve Hopkins)
The South Korean Olympic Trials concluded last week. Butterfly player Sangsu Lee (World No. 22) upset Jeoung Youngsik (World No. 13) to take the second team position. Jan Woo-Jin (World No. 11) has already qualified by World Ranking.
It is likely that Youngsik will be appointed to the third position, giving Korea a deep team with three quality players (all in the Top 25). Expect Korea to be one of the top 4 seeds in the team event at the Olympics. By the current rankings, China will be the top seed – likely fielding a team with three team members in the World’s Top 5. The German team currently has players ranked 10, 12, and 16 so they would claim the second seed if ranked today. Japan has Nos. 5, 17, and 18, so they will likely be seeded 2nd or 3rd.
