Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher announce divorce via sporty tennis photo, as one does - 2 minutes read
You know you’re having a weird week, in the pop culture universe, when your divorce announcement turns out to be the most charming thing you manage to pull off. But such is the life of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who appears to have taken a break from his current feud with actor Rebel Wilson by… announcing he’ll no longer be married to actor Isla Fisher. But in, like, kind of an adorable way!
In fact, Fisher and Cohen announced their separation jointly (via Instagram), having gone so far as to submit a modestly bizarre tennis-themed metaphor for the ol’ conscious uncoupling, complete with a silly photo of the two of them dressed up in tennis gear. (We cannot, for the life of us, ascertain whether this is a new photo that the pair took specifically to announce that they were no longer married to each other—which would be amazing—or just an old “We’re both dressed up for tennis” photo that they inexplicably decided to theme their divorce announcement around. Which would also be really weird, although the two do really like tennis, regularly attending Wimbledon together.)
“After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down,” the pair wrote, before making multiple calls for privacy that feel slightly out of touch with an announcement that inexplicably puts “We really enjoy tennis” ahead of “We are getting divorced”—but to each their own.
Cohen and Fisher have been married since 2010, and professionally collaborated only once, on 2016's The Brothers Grimsby—the “two brothers hide inside an elephant vagina together” comedy that’s also at the heart of Wilson’s conflict with the comedian. Wilson claims Cohen tried to block the release of her upcoming memoir, which she calls “the worst professional experience of my career,” saying Cohen and the films’ producers made her feel “humiliated” with numerous jokes about her body. (Reps for the film have pushed back on her account, saying Wilson was “welcomed as a collaborator in all creative areas” on the movie.)
